Simon Whitehead | Locator | Out Of The Woods | October 2003
Participating artists: Colleen Bartley, Jane Devlin, Tricia Durdey, Rachel Gomme, John Hurley and Miriam Keye.
The latest in Simon Whitehead's seasonal movement residencies, this time commissioned by Dance 4. Based in a converted barn and studio in Tycanol, a fragile, sessile oak woodland close to the Preseli hills in West Wales, a number of creative people from the Midlands spent a week examining the ground between dance, movement and ecology, through a process of walking, expedition, movement, witnessing and making on site. During the past eight years more than 80 dancers, movement and performance artists from the UK and beyond have taken part in LOCATOR residencies.
The project embraces the ecologies of urban and rural as the participants bring back to their own towns the work prepared in the woods. A small publication, supported by NOW and compiled from writings, drawings and sound recordings, made during the project, will document the completion of the physical phase of Out of the Woods.
