NOW 2006

Patrick Keiller and Stephen Connolly’s Nottingham Panorama, 24 March

Here’s an exciting new project arising from NOW being invited to produce a filmic contribution to the Opening Spectacular celebrating the re-opening of Nottingham’s Market Square. Acclaimed filmmakers Patrick Keiller (Clouds, London, Robinson in Space) and Stephen Connolly (Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2006) have been shooting in Nottingham earlier this month to combine contemporary imagery with Tram Rides through Nottingham, footage by the legendary Mitchell & Kenyon shot in 1902.

The film will consist of a montage of the current city and the early twentieth century tram ride from Nottingham Train Station to the former Victoria Train Station, now the site of the Victoria Centre. We have been promised a looped showing of the short film in the Market Square between 4.00pm and 7.00pm on Saturday 24 March 2007, the central day of the re-launch celebrations.

Nottingham’s pre-war trams ran from 1901 to 1936. Whether by design or serendipity, it just so happens we’ll be showing Nottingham Panorama on a big screen sited to the west of the Square - that is to say, the one point where the old and current tram lines co-incide. So this is a real chance to celebrate Nottingham’s latest regeneration with some ghosts of the past.

You’ll find some more detail about this project in a few ticks, in the programmes area of the site. NOW staff will be on hand on the day to tell you more about the archive and the contemporary film, to get your opinions and your memories of Nottingham, and to offer you free commemorative posters (while stocks last!).
