NOW 2006

All the latest

We may have seemed pretty hushed up lately, but we’re still struggling away. Here’s the wierd and worderful thingst we’ve been up to, and new projects that are coming up ...

During May, half the NOW team worked alongside colleagues in Nottingham City Council to pilot a new music and street festival, City Pulse. A bit of a strange departure for us, given that our daytime outdoor stages featured street artists, jazz and world music, singersongwriters and folk. Well, maybe it just reflects our usual eclecticism, and we did make sure there were quite a few club nights thrown in. Thanks to BBC Radio Nottingham, Trent FM, Central TV and many others who gave us encouraging coverage. Despite a drenchingly wet Whitsun Bank Holiday, 12500 souls were entertained outdoors, and many more at the associaetd (and drier) indoor events.

During June the whole team decamped to Germany for the opening events of Documenta 12 in Kassel http://www.documenta.de and Skulptur Projeckte Munster 07 http://www.skulptur-projecte.de, purely a fact finding mission, of course. In March our fearless leader visited Zurich for Gipfelsturmer, a showcase of recent new performance by Swiss artists and companies - there is some serioulsy interesting stuff going on there. Many thanks to Theaterhaus Gessnerallee for their invitation and excellent organisation, and to Pro Helvetica (the Arts Council of Switzerland) who provided the cash to bring promoters from across Europe to the event.

Following the success of Patrick Keiller and Stephen Connolly’s Nottingham Panarama (see elsewhere on this site), we initiated in collaboration with Nottingham Castle Museum a pilot outreach project for intergenerational groups to look and memories and the present of their local areas. We’ve largely now handed this over to other colleauges, but the first sessions began in ealy August in the Bestwood area of the city, and go on over a ten week period.

We’re working with Game City http://www.gamecity.org on elements of their programme this autumn that will take place in Old Market Square.

Also for the Square, we’re agitating to develop a series of temporary public art commissions, starting with a new piece we’re working on with NKprojects, aka Nayan Kulkarni http://www.nkprojects.co.uk.

Keep checking this site. Our news might be less frequent, but it’s essential.
