NOW 2006

Index of Deprivation

Where: Sixways Community Centre, Denton Green, Broxtowe

Date(s): Sun 16 – Sun 30 October, daily

Time(s): Daily

Cost: Free

Did you know the government collects statistics and data about you and your area? According to the government, Broxtowe is a deprived area. This project highlights that statistics don’t reveal the whole story about a community.

Throughout the festival, Simon Poulter’s images from his visits over the past few months to Broxtowe will be exhibited on the railings outside the Six Ways Community Centre.

Simon’s work explores the issues surrounding the way in which the Government has used statistics to assess deprivation and target resources in Nottingham’s Broxtowe District. Using detailed drawings, photographs and multimedia, Simon has developed a cultural picture of Broxtowe that challenges perceived ideas.

Simon Poulter studied painting at Norwich School of Art and St Martins. He is the founding member and Director of PVA MediaLab and lead artist on the Labculture programme.

He has been widely commissioned throughout the UK and abroad on projects ranging from The Eden Project to Photo98/Lovebytes. Most recently, he has been collaborating with Watershed and Hewlett Packard European Research Lab in Bristol on a project exploring mobile phone technologies.

“The intention is to develop a dialogue with audiences living in and outside the Broxtowe community. In turn, I hope we can encourage those who live outside the area to visit the estate; with a view to adjusting perceptions of Nottingham’s regeneration issues.” Simon Poulter
